About the Author
Christine Scharlach is a Canadian author and mother of two daughters, based in Ontario. She was inspired to write Brave Like Maddie after her youngest endured multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation for developmental hip dysplasia. At just two and a half years old, Maddie began to show signs of social anxiety and developed a stutter—a heartbreaking effect of navigating medical trauma during some of the most crucial developmental years of her life. Christine knew she needed to help her daughter process that experience with honesty, comfort, and connection.
She wanted Maddie to see herself as the hero of her story—and now she hope your kids will too.
She believes in the power of books to help children feel seen, safe, and brave—especially when life feels a little scary! When Christine isn’t writing or chasing after her girls, you’ll find her tending to her garden, dreaming up new stories, or reheating the same cup of coffee for the third time and calling it a win.
